99¸£ÀûÊÓƵ staff and students joined residents of Carolina Village retirement community on May 1 to celebrate the culmination of a nine-month oral history project that brought together student artists, storytellers and filmmakers with seniors from Carolina Village.
The event, entitled Voices & Visions Finale: Bridging Generations Through Storytelling and Art, included the screening of a documentary film created by art and film instructor Derek Rhodarmer, who has been documenting the project since it began last September. There were also presentations by the five participating instructors: communications instructors Rebekah Handy, Martha Gates and Curtis Philon, art instructor Ani Volkan, and Rhodarmer; as well as Carolina Village Wellness Coordinator Aleen Dailey.
The event also included the unveiling of a handmade quilt, which was a collaboration between 99¸£ÀûÊÓƵ art students and Carolina Village residents. The Voices & Visions quilt will be displayed at Locke Library on 99¸£ÀûÊÓƵ’s main campus throughout the summer, along with photos, videos and artifacts. In the fall, the project will move to the Asheville Art Museum before returning to its permanent home at Carolina Village.
